16 wedding crossword clue ideas—with examples

A good wedding crossword starts with an answer your guests can work out—not an obscure private joke. Mix a few easy wins with memories that encourage people to compare notes.

Start with the answer, then give a fair hint

Choose a name, place or shared favourite first. Then write a short sentence that points towards it. “Our first date” might leave most of the room guessing. “Our first-date stop, full of art and history” gives guests something to work with.

Use three kinds of clue: familiar facts, easy general hints and a few more personal memories. That lets a school friend contribute one answer while a relative contributes another. Avoid clues that only you two could possibly know.

A useful edit

Too vague: “Our favourite thing.”
Clearer: “Our rainy-day game, played with letter tiles.”
Fictional answer: SCRABBLE.

Keep the tone kind. Skip passwords, private addresses, health details, financial information, ex-partner jokes and anything a guest might be embarrassed to see in print. You can be personal without sharing sensitive information.

16 clue ideas to make your own

These answers and memories are fictional examples. Replace them with details that are true for you; there is no need to use them all.

If a long venue name is awkward, use its recognisable short name. Choose unique answers: repeating the same place with two different clues won’t add another useful entry.

An eight-answer starting point

Start small: one meeting place, one first date, one engagement memory, one holiday, one pet, one drink, one breakfast and one shared hobby. Here is a fictional set you can select and copy into your planning notes:

OXFORD | The city where our story began
MUSEUM | Our first-date stop, full of art and history
LISBON | The city where we got engaged
TRAIN | How we travelled on our first holiday: by rail
OLIVE | Our rescue cat’s name
COFFEE | Our morning drink, made from beans
PANCAKES | Our favourite Sunday breakfast, served in a stack
SCRABBLE | Our rainy-day game, played with letter tiles

In the creator, enter each answer and clue in its own field. Replace the fictional sample details and use your own names and date. The eight answers above were checked with our generator; your replacements still need their own preview.

Make the answers fit the puzzle

Wedding Puzzle Studio accepts 8–16 unique answers. Each answer needs 3–16 letters after spaces, punctuation and accents are normalised for the grid. The answer field accepts letters, spaces, apostrophes and hyphens; digits aren’t accepted. Each clue can use up to 88 characters.

Choose a mix of answer lengths and some shared letters. Not every set will form a complete connected crossword. If the creator asks you to adjust a word, try a shorter answer, a different memory or another layout, then check the new preview. Don’t promise yourself a particular grid before you’ve tried the words.

A quick check before you print

  1. Read every clue aloud. Is it clear without explaining the whole story?
  2. Check spellings and make sure the answer is the one you intended.
  3. Preview the game and answer page. The online view shows the puzzle and content, but isn’t a pixel-identical PDF layout.
  4. After buying, print one guest page at 100% / Actual size on your chosen paper. Check readability before making the rest of your copies.
  5. Keep the separate answer page with your host rather than placing it on the guest tables.

Want to check your printer before buying? Our free four-page A4 sample contains a fixed fictional crossword and word search plus their answer pages. It cannot be personalised.

Planning for guests who haven’t met?

A crossword works best as an invitation to work together, not a test of who knows you most. Our guide to low-pressure wedding table games includes a simple host script and alternatives for guests who prefer a word search or a no-print activity.
